A Prayer to Maintain Proper Focus

But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” Matthew 14:30

Have you ever driven in torrential rain? ...a snow storm? ...a storm of any kind?

Years ago, a friend and I were traveling to support our mentor as she was serving at a ministry engagement. Our travel day started out with a beautiful sunny day. Out of nowhere, without warning, a terrible hail storm unlike anything either of us had experienced appeared. With terrifying sounds on the top and hood of our vehicle and the clashing on our windshield, we both were anxious. We had not seen hail that size ever. We prayed as we crept nervously along discussing whether we should continue to drive. We continued, nevertheless, hoping we would drive out of it in no time. And that’s exactly what happened. What seemed liked forever, was only momentary. No sooner than we had driven into this storm, we were on the other side in beautiful sunshine again.

Something very similar happened with the disciples in Matthew 14. They were experienced fishermen, who were walking in obedience to Jesus by even being on the boat at that time. Verse 22 says, “Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.” In other words, the All-knowing God in the Person of Jesus Christ knew what was ahead and sent His disciples still. This should calm fear and silence anxiety in our lives knowing God is aware and must have purpose in the storms He allows.

This storm begins to rage immediately and the disciples are afraid for their life. Jesus doesn’t rush to them. But when He does arrive, He displays His Sovereignty by appearing walking on the water amidst the storm. God is sovereign and will come for His children no matter what. Sovereignty means God governs the entire universe according to good His pleasure. It means He answers to no thing and no one. He is the Supreme Ruler. He’s the possessor of heaven and earth.

What things in your life are contradicting what God has said and has promised you? Shift your focus away from those things and place it back on God. Wrong focus causes you to drift and even worst, sink. Other than Jesus, Peter walked on water amidst a storm when he maintained proper focus—on Jesus. God is the Author and Finisher of your Faith. Humble your heart, open your mouth and ask God to save you. When you do, watch the storm within you cease and watch your Saviour come for you.

We can find ourselves in uncanny situations as we are walking in obedience to God. Know that. But these situations never diminish the truth that God will never leave nor forsake us; He’s with us even unto the end of the world.

Let’s Pray: Dear God, Thank You that we’re never alone. Thank You that You’re always with us. Thank You that trouble won’t last always. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

A Prayer to "Be About It!"

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion... Genesis 1:26a

Easter is right around the corner. Okay! It’s down the street...days away. The wonderful fact about our faith is no one and nothing can diminish or take away the truth and celebration of our Risen Lord. Not even Coronavirus COVID-19.

While I’m grateful that the sacrifice of Jesus grants us eternal access to be with God in Heaven, I gotta tell you that Heaven wasn’t God’s reason for sending Jesus to Earth to be tortured, to die and to be resurrected. If that was the case, we would have been BEAMED UP the day we gave our lives to Christ. If not Heaven, then what and why? I’m glad you asked!

Donald Lawrence wrote a song several years ago titled, “Let’s Get Back to Eden.” This song talks about God’s original intent for us. The chorus says, “Let’s get back to Eden. Live on top of the world.” The point of the song is that we get back to our original God-designed intent in creation. (If you’ve not heard this song, I encourage you to check it out.)

In the Garden of Eden, according to Genesis 1:26, God originally created us to reign, rule and dominate. Then Adam threw a seemingly monkey wrench into the plans, which didn’t catch God by surprise. BUT JESUS!!! He restored our relationship to God and gave to us the keys of the Kingdom, which places us back in position to reign, rule and dominate right here on Earth--in the here and now! Matthew 6:10 says, "Your kingdom come. Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven." We’re to bring heaven to earth by fulfilling God’s Kingdom agenda. That’s why we’re still here. Heaven can wait.

As we approach Resurrection Sunday, let’s commit for the rest of our days on this side of heaven, to BE ABOUT IT--God's Kingdom Agenda!

Let’s Pray: Father God, Thank You for the Precious Gift of Jesus Christ and all that He affords us. Thank You for trusting us with Your Kingdom Agenda. Forgive us for It not being our central, primary focus. We commit, with the help of Holy Spirit, to establish It on Earth. We commit to seek first Your Kingdom and Your Righteousness. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
